STUART SILVER
FOX RANCHThis book details the events of a large silver fox ranch that was located near Stuart, Nebraska, between 1928 - 1953. The ranch soon became the largest in the entire Midwest and produced the pelts for some of the largest coat manuafacturers in the United States. Silver foxes are not native to Nebraska and there are only a few places in the United States where can be found in the wild. The fur of the silver fox was considered the very best of all animal pelts, so raising them in captivity supplied the demand. Stuart became well-known, so when the pelts from this ranch became available on the market, buyers paid top dollar for them in places like New York City. Few people alive today remember the Stuart Silver Fox Ranch which makes this story intriguing since it's existence has mostly slipped into obscurity. A twist to this story is the fate of the thousands of surplus horses in the surrounding area when gasoline tractors became more frequent.
