By Jerry Penry
This book details the majority of the innovative American patents that have been issued for land surveying monuments over the past 145 years. It tells the story of the early struggle to convince the General Land Office of the need for a durable monument and to move away from using stones, wooden stakes, and pits and mound monuments. The book also shows the patents issued for monuments used for general surveying and construction staking. Many diagrams and the associated text show the various patents from the earliest iron monuments to the latest radio frequency identification patents. A must have book for the surveyor interested in the history of the monument.
A total of 99 patents are shown in consecutive order from 1869-2014. Most patents have multiple drawings and pages of text. Each drawing and associated text page have been digitally cleaned. In addition, there is a list of 30 other American survey monument patents and diagrams showing early monuments that were not patented. An Introduction, History of the United States Patent Office, and Index are also included in this book.
