Triangulation station "BOLAND" is located on a gently sloping pasture hill in Charles Mix County, South Dakota, and is approximately 3.5 miles from the nearest shore of the Missouri River. The name given for this station most likely comes from a local landowner named John Boland. In 1948, surveyors from USC&GS found the monument and used it as a station in their own network. At this time, two reference marks were placed consisting of bronze disks in square concrete pads. It is unknown if the USC&GS surveyors actually checked to make sure that the surface monument was directly over the drill hole in the lower stone before accepting the center hole in the triangle of the cap. These heavy cast iron caps measure 5.5" diameter.
