MISSOURI
RIVER COMMISSION
The Missouri River Commission was one of the first government agencies to perform a survey on a grand scale with high precision. Their work was well ahead of its time and the monumentation established during the course of their work was more than what any other government agency was doing at that time. Both their horizontal and vertical monuments had upper and lower markers placed. The survey of the Missouri River in Nebraska began in 1889 and ended in 1890. A total of 39 cast iron monuments for triangulation stations were placed in Nebraska. Each had a lower stone marker in case the surface marker became disturbed or removed. Approximately 90 cast iron bench marks were also placed which also had lower monuments. The Missouri River Commission was abolished in 1902.Recovered Monuments
