Inside a manhole is an unusual location for a bench mark, but the location has most likely served to protect it. This bench mark is located near the community of Rochford, South Dakota, which is today an area of a few remaining houses. It is unclear if the USC&GS surveyors placed the protective manhole around the bench mark in 1934, but the 1938 recovery report states that it was there. Recovered by Kurt Luebke, Jenny Stukel and Jerry Penry along the Mickelson hiking trail in the central Black Hills.
