CONTRIBUTING BENCH MARK PHOTOS

Photo contributions to the early USGS bench mark page are welcomed. The contributor must first be familiar with the appearance of the early USGS bench marks and differentiate between them and the modern ones that were placed later. One example of each type of bench mark per datum is being sought. The types are generally bronze or aluminum tablets, caps on iron pipes, or copper bolts. Other sought after photos are of the secondary bench marks that were used in the early surveys such as the copper nail/washers or other tags.

The best example per datum and per type will be used. Only in the case of a better image will an existing contribution be replaced, so it is important to obtain the best image possible and at the highest resolution and clarity. I will downsize and crop the image. Things to consider are to avoid shadows, vegetation, damage, or dirt on the bench mark. Also, photograph the image from straight above the top of the bench mark and not at an angle.
