A great example of a late 1890's USGS bench mark. This bench mark, known as "DW 4507", is located along a little-used trail several miles from the nearest graded road and less than two miles west of the eastern boundary of the Black Hills National Forest Reserve. Recovered by Jenny Stukel and Jerry Penry.

Looking southwest at the bench mark. The well-known Harney Peak can be seen in the distance about 9 miles away.

The top looks as if it is only a few years old and certainly not well over one hundred years old.
A hunter, likely bored after not finding any game, decided to take a shot with a high-powered rifle.
