"DW 5042"

ca. 1898

This bench mark was most likely struck by a vehicle since the iron posts typically project above the ground by at least a foot or more. The cap was missing. The location is at the southern end of an area known as the "Bald Hills" which is an area in the Black Hills mostly void of timber. It had that name in the 1890's as indicated on the early USGS quad sheet. It is approximately 4 miles southeast of the former town of Pactola or approximately 10 miles southwest of Rapid City. Recoverd by Jerry Penry and Jenny Stukel.

The iron post bent over.

The damaged monument with a rock lying near it.

Looking south through a pass between two hills known as the "Twin Sisters".

Top view of the iron post showing the long rivets that once attached the brass cap to the pipe.

Location on the USGS 1898 quad sheet "Rapid".
