"DW 5131"

ca. 1898

Located southwest of Spearfish, this bench mark is in a beautiful location surrounded by birch trees. The original description stated that it was placed 2.3' north of the township corner indicating that this monument was distinctively separate from the section corner. Today there is no visible sign of the township corner. Stamping on the cap on the bench mark indicates that it is now being used as the township corner.

A nice off road location surrounded by birch trees.

A nearby sign designates it as a survey monument.

The original description from 1898 indicates it was set beside the township corner.

Another side view of the monument.

The bronze cap is stamped as if it is now the township corner.

A road scene near the area of the bench mark.

Remains of an old wagon once used by a homesteader, miner, or perhaps surveyor?
