This is a bench mark that has eluded discovery. The original description by USGS stated that it was a copper bolt in the northwest side of a rock quarry 1/2 mile south of the former railroad station at Nahant, South Dakota. Further information stated it was 200 feet west of the railroad tracks and 30 feet southwest and 14 feet above the wagon road. Despite a search with the metal detector, the monument was not found. The quarry may have had further use and the copper bolt removed.
The location is somewhere on the slope of this hill as viewed from the Mickelson Trail which was formerly the railroad.
Kurt Luebke searching for the copper bolt.
Heavy brush made searching with the metal detector difficult.
The location as shown on the early USGS topo sheet.
