Bench Mark
"DW 6304"ca. 1898
Jerry Penry
September 25, 2015
This bench mark is located on the South Dakota/Wyoming state line approximately 16 miles west of Deadwood. Two attempts to locate this monument have been made with no success. The first on October 4, 2014, and the second on September 25, 2015. According to the USGS leveling notes, the bench mark was placed 2.1' southeast of the GLO closing corner. The GLO notes indicate that it was 2 links south and 2 links east of the Closing Corner. No evidence of the closing corner could be found either. A primitive trail road meanders along the state line from the north and abruptly makes a turn to the northwest at this location. There is also a culvert pipe buried here so construction might have destroyed the monument. Kurt Luebke and Dave Ingram assisted in the second search.
