DOWN IN CHARLOTTE
The Plane, the Train, and the Burning Broom

The majority of the bomber crews who trained for World War II were young and inexperienced. One such crew, under the direction of 2nd Lt. Claude R. Nelon, was given a weekend pass by their commanding officers for being awarded "Crew of the Week". The crew had recently survived a mid-air collision during a training mission. Their weekend pass of fun turned into anything but fun when their factory new B-17 landed on the mainline of the Southern Railroad tracks as a train was approaching. The crew was reprimanded and split up after this incident. Most of the crew members never heard from each other again until this story was researched.
