TRAGEDY
on the
TRAPLINEThis is the true story of the events that took place in northern Nebraska during the 1931-32 trapping season. Two men entered a partnership where they would share equally in the profits while trapping wild animals for their fur. One was a local man who was well-known in the area while the other was an outsider from Wisconsin. When it came time for them to part ways in the spring, the local man was later found dead under mysterious circumstances. The other partner was immediately blamed for his death and was tried and convicted in Holt County District Court. The story did not end there as the convicted man and his attorneys fought hard to prove his innocence. Was the death of the local man actually the result of a feud with another local man who had a grudge against him? Was the death even a murder or was it from natural or other unknown causes? This mystery gripped the area as most people quickly formed their own opinions as to what they thought had happened. This story is full of circumstantial evidence that brought a conviction, but was also full of plausible and alternate scenarios.
