BLACK HILLS MERIDIAN
Black Hills, South Dakota
September 4, 2010
The Initial Point for the surveys in the Black Hills region and the western portion of South Dakota is located on the Wyoming/South Dakota state line. The Initial Point is at the intersection of the Black Hills Base Line with the Black Hills Meridian. The initial point in the Black Hills was necessary to facilitate the surveys in that area since the surveys from the 5th and 6th Principal Meridians and surveys of the Principal Meridian of Montana could not easily reach this area when surveys were quickly needed for settlement.
