Located two miles east of Johnstown, Nebraska, this stone marker is a very good example of one of the original USC&GS bench marks across northern Nebraska. It was placed along the south railroad right-of-way fence. I first discovered this bench mark on November 28, 1997, and returned to obtain updated photos on September 2, 2010. Johnstown is a small community along U. S. Highway 20 with about 50 inhabitants. The C&NW Railroad that went through this area was built through Johnstown in 1882 and abandoned in 1992. The USC&GS surveyors placed this bench mark in 1901 during their leveling route from Page to Chadron, Nebraska.

A great example of an early USC&GS limestone bench mark.
