Bench mark "E 4" was established by USC&GS at Whitney, Nebraska, along the Chicago & North Western Railroad in the year 1902. The monument is a 6-inch square limestone post with the letters "U S B M" inscribed on the top and a square cut hole in the center. The last record of anyone finding this bench mark occurred in 1957. Nearly all of the landmarks have been removed since that date making this monument a challenge to find. Recovery and photos by Gene Thomsen.
