1900

Bench mark "G 2" was established by USC&GS at Plainview, Nebraska, in 1900. The monument was a copper bolt set into the brick face of a building owned by N. M. Nelson and used as a hardware store. Today the building is a tavern known as "Fat's Lounge". As seen in the last picture the brick has a significant crack next to the monument. When this monument was located in 1997 the crack was just hairline and not very visible. As with most monuments set into the brick faces of buildings, there is evidence that people might have tried to scratch around it and remove it in the past. The surface of the monument was originally smooth and would have had cross lines with a punch mark in the center.
