When this bench mark was established at Hansen, Nebraska, in 1899, it was described as being opposite the railroad depot. The depot has long been gone as well as the tracks, but Nebraska surveyor Lyle W. Davis was able to piece together enough clues to determine its hidden location.

Rex and Dave get after it with shovels after probing indicated a hard object below the surface.

That initial sight of success when you know you have recovered something that has been hidden for so long!

The cleaned surface.

Cracks are visible in the limestone post after being in the ground for 100+ years.

The original 1899 description for the location of this bench mark.
