U. S. Coast & Geodetic Survey
Bench Mark"N 2"
1901Jerry Penry
November 28, 1997
Located three miles east of O'Neill, Nebraska, this stone marker is the last USC&GS original bench mark found along the Burlington Railroad before connecting to the C&NW Railroad at O'Neill. This was the first bench mark established during the 1901 season after leaving Page, Nebraska, where operations had ceased the previous season. Moss will typically grow on these old limestone markers.
The stone bench mark is a lasting reminder of the geodetic surveyors who came through that area in 1901.
The concrete post behind the bench mark is a railroad fence post. The wooden post to the right it a witness post for the bench mark.
