Bench Mark"U-1"

Bench mark "U-1" was established by USC&GS at Wayne, Nebraska, in 1900. A spur line was run from Norfolk, Nebraska, to Sioux City, Iowa, to connect with the elevations earlier established by the Missouri River Commission. The monument is a copper bolt set into the brick face of the First National Bank building. This monument is one of the best examples of a copper bolt still in existence with the cross cut lines clearly visible. It appears that someone had once spot-painted the mark with orange paint and attempts have been made to clean it off. Most of the paint is now faded.
The old bank building still exists at the northwest corner of Second and Main Streets in Wayne. The arrow points to the bench mark location.

Flecks of paint can be seen in the lead that surrounds the copper bolt where someone once made a poor decision to spot-paint the bench mark.
