This bench mark is located three miles east of Chadron, Nebraska. The magnificent stone culvert was likley fairly new when the surveyors affixed their permanent mark up it. Often the railroad first constructed temporary drainage structures such as wooden trestles, and then later built the permanent masonry structures after the railroad was already operational. The stone arch to the left was built in 1911 as indicated by the date on the keystone and doubled the size of the opening. The railroad reached Chadron in 1885.

The arrow points to the location of the bench mark on top of the stone culvert structure.
