SEMINAR LOCATION
FLYER & REGISTRATION LODGING
CAMPGROUND RESERVATION
WHAT TO BRING The summer seminar informally begins Thursday evening, July 14, at the Group Campground for anyone who wants to arrive early and spend time as a group for a cookout. Please plan to bring your own food and beverages for the Thursday evening cookout.
The seminar begins Friday morning, July 15, with registration and breakfast beginning at 6:30 a.m. Breakfast will be provided as part of the cost of registration. An introduction to field activities will be given and depending upon the number of attendees, we will break off into small groups.
The main aspect of the morning activity will be the recovery of as many 1915 GLO section corner monuments as possible in the designated sections. At least one monument should be tied out, and then fully excavated to examine the 8"x8"x6" cement base that is recorded to be at each monument. Then the monument will be placed back as found. Knowing what the cement base or memorial looks like will be beneficial for future recoveries in Nebraska should the capped iron pipe be missing.
If possible, groups will decide whether to carefully excavate the soil to search for remnants of the pits. Four were placed at each section corner and two at each quarter corner. Each pit measures 20"x20"x15". See the link below for the arrangement of the pits.
Groups will meet back at the Group Campground at 11:30 a.m. for a catered lunch. Immediately after lunch, there will be displays and demonstrations taking place on the use of vintage surveying instruments including a solar compass and plane table. Please consider bringing your old equipment to display and be part of a photo.
After lunch, groups will resume the search for additional monuments or participate in searching for monuments placed at the corners of the forest tree plots.
