UNITED STATES
GEOLOGICAL SURVEY
(1890's Triangulation Stations in Nebraska)

The United States Geological Survey had two early triangulation networks in Nebraska. The first was located along the Platte River west from North Platte to Broadwater in 1896. This network consisted of 21 points including a baseline at North Platte that was established in 1892. A traverse was first run along the Union Pacific Railroad in 1892 between the astronomical station at Omaha (USC&GS 1869) and the one at North Platte (Wheeler 1874). The second triangulation network was surveyed in 1897 and was located in Cedar County in the northeastern corner of the state. This network consisted of seven points and an additional two points that already existed from the Missouri River Commission. All points established by USGS in these early triangulation networks were brass caps on iron pipes.

The links below show the locations of the USGS triangulation networks.
